Working at PCS

By: Shelley Thompson, UK Sales Manager

A little introduction from me…

I’m Shelley Thompson, I’m the UK Sales Manager at PCS. I oversee the day to day running of the sales team and anything that falls broadly around that sits with me. I have worked at PCS for 13 years, starting, initially, as an Account Manager, then moving to Sales Supervisor and somewhere along the way, with a lot of hard work and dedication, I now run the UK Sales team.

This blog post has been a long time coming, but I’ve finally managed to get ten minutes to put the thoughts in my head down on paper, to explain what it’s like to bring up 2 kids and work full time at PCS Business Systems.

No two days are ever the same at PCS. I could be managing vendor floor walks one minute and the next be in a meeting with the rest of the management team organising the next PCS event. I think it’s fair to say that I’m kept pretty busy.

Outside of work I have 2 young children who are 7 and 8. I love being a mum, my kids are my number one priority and every single spare moment of my time out of work is spent with them, watching them grow means everything to me. That’s where PCS plays a part.

Working full time and bringing up two children isn’t easy, doing a 8.45am – 5.30pm job, while trying to squeeze in the school run, lunches, after school clubs, sports days, parents evenings or illness, means that I have to run a tight ship at home as well as at work. That being said I wouldn’t be able to do any of it if it wasn’t for the support that PCS gives me,
as an employer.

PCS as a company is very family oriented. All of the management team, as well as a good percentage of the staff, all have young children. The company ethos is that people who are happy with their home life will be happy in their work life, meaning that people are more productive as a result and, if I’m honest, this is true. I worked at a few places prior to PCS, where many of the staff still work away at 7pm at night and I used to think to myself, they are missing out on time with their children and families. Well, PCS takes a different view on this.

If you’ve ever visited the PCS offices, you will have noticed that, at 5.30pm, people are encouraged to go home, spend time with their families and leave work for the day, all except the Service Desk anyway. Those techie guys work 8am – 6pm on a rota, taking it in turns to work ‘earlies’ & ‘lates’, so they may be found in the office after usual hours.

I like this family focussed way of working, knowing that you won’t be expected to sacrifice home life, after your working day.

PCS give me the flexibility to be able to take my children to school in the morning, which is really important to me, the children don’t start school until 9am and my contracted hours at PCS are 8.45am – 5.30pm, but they understand the importance of me being able to take my children to school so allow me to do it. In addition to that, twice a week I leave the office early, pick the children up after school, take them home and work from there for the last few hours of the day. The systems we have in place at PCS promote remote working, so it makes it easy for me to get home, switch my laptop on and carry on where I left off.

These are just a few examples of the flexibility PCS brings to me, if I had to write everything down that PCS enables me do, this blog post would take about a month to read.

PCS is a great company to work for and I could never bring up my children in the way that I do if it wasn’t for their help, the understanding and compromise they give to the people that work there is second to none.

I’m off to ask for a pay rise now, for my company endorsements.
